We are in our regular practice routines now - Mon and Wed, from 6-730pm for Youth and 6-8pm for HS/U16.   BUT, it is never to late to bring out a friend to give rugby a try!  It is always free to come and check out a practice.

  • Oct 22:  Registration & Uniform Pickup afternoon
    • (Coach Rob's house - 13210 N. 11th Ave Phoenix (Thunderbird & 11th Ave))  View map
    • Preferred time slots:  U8/10 - 1pm; U12 - 2pm; U14 - 3pm; U16/HS - 4pm.
    • If you can't make your slot, just come over when convenient.
    • Remember to bring your old kit that is now too small for the uniform & cleat exchange program.

 

Rugby Arizona Kick-Off Day at ASU - Oct 21 (1-4pm)

The annual RAZ Kick-off Day at ASU will be on the Intramural Fields at the Sun Devil Fitness Center (400 E. Apache Bvld, Tempe) (same location as previous years).   This year it is being hosted by the ASU Womens Club and after our program everyone is encouraged to stick around and support the team as they play a round-robin series of matches from 4pm to 8pm with the GCU Womens team and the UA Womens team.

Time:  1 - 4pm
Address:  400 E. Apache Blvd, Tempe

The format will be the same as in previous years.   All the kids will be sorted into their age groups and rotated thru a series of drill stations run by ASU and Bobcats coaches.    We will split the kids into 6 groups:  U10 coed, U12 coed, U14 boys, U16 boys, HS boys, U14-HS girls, and have 6 different skills stations for everyone to work through.   Wear your rugby kit and bring a mouthguard for some potential light contact work.   Bring shade tents, water & snacks!

 

Atavus - Coaching Rugby Fundamentals - Oct 28 (2-6pm)

 Atavus rugby experts will conduct a 4 hour course covering the fundamentals of coaching rugby, including what the National teams are focusing on.  
The course is being hosted by Grand Canyon University Rugby Club, onsite at GCU  (all the details are in the purchase link).

The course cost is $40 in advance for Coaches, $45 at the door.  High School students can attend for only $20, and Youth are free.

  • Sunday Nov 12:  HS / U16 Volunteering at St Vincent DePaul. 
    • 9.30am - 1.00pm.   Human Services Campus, 1075 W. Jackson St, Phoenix, AZ.  Serving meals with Mens Club

2017-2018 Season Calendar Overview

 

Fall 7s Season for Youth and HS Boys & HS Girls

  • Fall 7s season:  Nov 4, Nov 11, Nov 18.
    • Nov 4 - Saturday at Benedict Park (Tempe).  Youth from 4-6pm and HS/U16 from 6-10pm.
    • Nov 11 – Saturday daytime at Kino Sports Complex, Tucson, with the Pac7s tournament.  First games will start at 9am.
    • Nov 18 - Saturday at Pecos Park (Ahwatukee)Youth from 4-6pm and HS/U16 from 6-10pm.
  • Dec 2: Arizona Rugby Festival 7s Tournament.  Games for U8, U10, U12, U14 in tackle & touch.

Spring 7s Season for Youth & HS Girls (7 weeks total)

  • Jan 13 – Feb 24: League Season
    • 5 weeks of home and away
    • Semi Finals on Feb 17
    • Finals on Feb 24

 

Spring 15s Season for HS & U16 Boys (15 calendar weeks total)

  • Jan 13: Mixed scrimmage in Phoenix at WSC
  • Jan 20 – April 21: League season.
    • 8 matches over 10 weeks of home and away (Jan 20-Apr 7).
    • Mar 3 - bye for Las Vegas 7s
    • Mar 31 – bye for Easter weekend
    • Semi Finals on April 14 for HS and U16.
    • HS Finals on April 21
  • April 28:  North vs South All-Stars match
    • Rotating up to Phoenix (hosted by ASU or GCU, tbd)

 

Bobcats All-Stars Program Highlights

  • EIRA Camp in Phoenix:  Oct 22, Oct 29, Nov 19, Dec 10.   $120 participation cost.
  • Bobcats Winter Camp in Phoenix:  Dec 9, Dec 16.
  • 7s:  Las Vegas LVI = March 1-3, 2018
  • 7s:  Albuquerque Celtic – late May
  • 15s: Denver RCT - mid June
  • 7s:  Potentially California State Games, NAI 7s (Utah) or Victoria 7s (B.C. Canada) over July-Aug

 

Education/Certification Dates

  • Level 1 Referee Clinics - Sept 3 at ASU; Oct 6 at Flagstaff.
  • Level 200 Coaching Clinic – Nov/Dec TBD
  • Level 300 Coaching Clinic potentially in Jan/Feb.
  • Strength & Conditioning Course – Oct 1 in Phoenix

RECRUITING: HELP GROW OUR GREAT SPORT!

In order to grow our numbers to fill out these teams we need help from all current players to bring their friends out to give rugby a try!

Come and join a practice and see what rugby is all about!  It is free to come to a practice and check it out.

Also, we are a co-ed squad so bring out the girls as well as the boys!  Girls rugby is also a fast growing sport (check it out at the Olympics!) and the Firebirds encourage girls to come out and give rugby a try.  

REMEMBER:  It is never too late to get started with rugby.  If you have kids that are interested and want to give it a shot, bring them out to practice and we'll get them involved!

Practice Location & Schedule

Location:  Biltmore Preparatory Academy.  4601 N. 34th Street, Phoenix AZ 85018.

Practice is on Mondays and Wednesdays during the season.

6:00 pm to 7.30 pm for Youth and 6.00 pm to 8:00 pm for High School & U16.

General practice reminder:  always have your mouthguard and be dressed appropriately for running and tackling!  If you can't make it, please advise your coach.
