By PJ Rovinelli, 09/25/18, 10:15AM MST

The Phoenix Rugby Club is excited to announce the hiring of Pat Schwartz as the new backs coach for the 2019 season.
"I am very excited to welcome Pat to our coaching team," says Head Coach Brad Sandig. " He brings a great deal of experience and expertise not only in the backs, but with the game of rugby too.  We are very lucky to have him join our family.  I'm looking forward to a tremendous season with our great coaching staff, and I am confident we will learn a lot from each other."
Coach Pat, a Hibbing, Minnesota native, was introduced to rugby during the off-season while playing professional hockey for Mannheim, Germany.  He played professional rugby as a back for 11 years with DSV 78 Hannover in the Rugby Bundesliga, the professional league in Germany.  Stateside, he played Semi-Pro with the Chicago Lions RFC and Kansas City Blues RFC.
He has gone on to coach at numerous rugby camps including Nike and Adidas, and is a part of Team Adidas Europe. He has also recruited for the Chicago Lions RFC.
"You don't come across too many guy like Pat looking to coach," explains president and club captain PJ Rovinelli. "Not only does he have a strong rugby  background as both a player and coach, he has a tremendous amount of passion to develop players. That was the icing on the cake for us."
Pat is a member of USA Rugby, German Rugby Federation, and the French Rugby Federation.  He is a current Grey Lion for the Chicago Lions RFC, and active in the newly created  professional league in the US, Major League Rugby (MLR).
"I knew from our first conversation that Pat was different," says Rovinelli. "He has a relentless commitment to grow the sport and strong family values. He aligns well with our cultural values and we are fortunate to have him."
Phoenix rugby kicks off preseason training Tuesday, September 25th. Their first competition will be the Flagstaff 10's on Saturday, October 13th. Stay up to date with club information on our Facebook page and website at
